Are you a Mac gamer and a Star Wars fan? If you are, I’m afraid 2019 will be a tough year for you.
Star Wars The Old Republic Star Wars the Old Republic for mac is the same game that is supported for the PC, but is now compatible with Mac OS systems. The Old Republic was developed by Bioware in 2008 as a new generation MMORPG. Their have been millions of players registered since the dawn of the beginning of Swtor. Knights of the Old Republic, more commonly known as KOTOR is an excellent game. I recently purchased it more mac and it has a lot of technical issues on Intel base macs. I was able to play through the entire game (twice actually) on my Macbook 10.5.5. Download Star Wars™: KOTOR for macOS 10.11.6 or later and enjoy it on your Mac. 4000 years before the Galactic Empire, you must lead a party of heroes and villains in an epic struggle to save the galaxy.
MacOS has never been the place to be for serious Star Wars fans. After all, the company in charge of Star Wars games, EA, is notorious for having no love for the Mac platform (when was the last time we saw an EA game on Mac?).
But we knew that already. 2019 will be a tough year because it’s the year the majority of Star Wars games on Mac were discontinued.
The good news? Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are here to stay.
All the Star Wars Mac games you can no longer play…
The Force used to be strong on Mac. In fact, several Star Wars games had an official Mac version, until recently… Indeed, with Apple’s decision to stop supporting 32-bit apps, most of the great Star Wars game available on Mac will no longer work on Catalina, the newest macOS version.
On top of that, Aspyr Media, the company in charge of most Star Wars Mac games, officially announced that a large part of their back catalog will be discontinued.
A once a great Star Wars choice, no longer available for Mac…
Unfortunately, the list of discontinued games includes most of their Star Wars games:
- Star Wars: Empire at War
- Star Wars: Jedi Academy
- Star Wars: Jedi Outcast
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
That leaves us with Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2 as the only remaining Star Wars games from Aspyr officially supported on macOS Catalina and beyond.

Older choices for retro gamers
Not everything is bad news. If we take a look at GOG’s catalog of older games, they still offer a few Star Wars games for Mac:
Granted, these are old-school games that only retro gamers will appreciate, but it’s still good to have options. For the rest of us, one of the most critically-acclaimed Star Wars ever released remains at our disposal.
Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic 2 on Mac
KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords is the sequel to the cult classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In KOTOR 2, you take control of an exile who rediscovers her connection to the Force.
As with any other RPG, you decide how your character looks like, but through certain dialogue options and decisions, you can also affect your character’s alignment with the Force. Acts of kindness and nobility reflect the light side, while cruel or vile, the dark side.
Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic 2 was released for Mac on July 21, 2015. But that wasn’t just a Mac release 10 years too late, it was the release of a remastered version of the game.
With that release, Aspyr made an already great game even better:
The update included the following:
- 37 achievements to be earned through gameplay
- Steam Cloud saves
- Native widescreen resolution support
- Resolution support up to 4K and 5K
- Support for controllers, including Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, and Playstation 4, along with several others
- Steam Workshop support! We proudly worked with the Restored Content Mod Team to have their famous TSLRCM up on launch day
And while all those features are excellent additions, the Restored Content Mod is probably the best one. As explained by Kotaku:
The Restored Content Mod is a years-spanning project that aims to return the game to its proper form—rather than the sloppy, stitched together version that was originally released due to publisher pressure and time constraints.
The mod adds a handful of endings and the infamous HK Factory and fixes hundreds of bugs.
If for some reason, you missed this excellent RPG 15 years ago, this is the best time to give it a shot.

Star Wars: The Old Republic made a lot of noise when it first came out in 2011. It wasn’t only a huge and ambitious MMORPG, it was also a brand-new Star Wars game that promised to be bigger than any Star Wars game before it.
Based on estimates, Star Wars: The Old Republic (or SW: TOR, as the kids like to call it) is one of the most expensive games ever made. It also became the “fastest-growing MMO ever” when it reached 1 million subscribers within three days of its launch. Mac gamers, unfortunately, had to watch all of it from the sidelines, as the game was only released for Windows.
But then in January 2012, BioWare’s co-founders publicly stated that a Mac version of the game was on the table. Is SW: TOR ever coming to Mac? But even if it does, wouldn’t you be better off with one of the best MMORPG Mac games?
Is Star Wars: The Old Republic ever coming to Mac?
During an interview with Massively in January 2012, BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, had this to say about a Mac version:
We know there’s a big Mac audience of BioWare fans… We know that’s an important and large audience. And we want to serve that audience.
Regarding a concrete time table, they added:
That’s definitely one of the things we’re looking at next. We want to get this launch under our belt and everything stabilized and happy, and then we’ll look at other platforms, and that’s obviously one of the first ones.
That made us hopeful but since that interview, both Muzyka and Zeschuk left BioWare, and not a single comment or statement regarding SW: TOR for Mac has been given.
Some claim a Mac port never happened because it wouldn’t be worth BioWare’s time. Looking at all the forum posts about this online, most notably The Old Republic‘s with 870 comments and Mac Rumors’ with 182,000 views, I beg to differ.
Either way, it’s already 2019 and it seems virtually impossible that SW: TOR for Mac ever happens.
How to play Star Wars: The Old Republic on Mac
A lack of a Mac version doesn’t mean SW: TOR can’t be played on Mac. It just means you’ll need Windows or another third-party tool. As you probably know, there are several ways to play Windows games on Mac.
So the question isn’t whether or not you can play SW: TOR on Mac. The question is how:
[table “151” not found /]Bootcamp and Parallels are both straightforward methods. Wine can be a little trickier but this Reddit guide is an excellent starting point if you’re willing to go that route. No matter what method you chose, make sure your Mac meets the game’s official Windows system requirements:
- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz or better
- Operating System: Windows 7 or later
- RAM: 3GB RAM
- Graphics: 1GB RAM and support for Shader 3.0 such as Intel HD 3000 or better, AMD Radeon HD 7450, Nvidia GeForce 610 or better.
Running SW: TOR does require an extra effort, and after all these years, one has to wonder: Is it the best MMO you could be playing on your Mac?

Star Wars The Old Republic Mac Os
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft (WoW) is still the best MMO out there. It receives excellent Expansions, which even after all these years, manage to reinvent the game. Battle for Azeroth, the game’s latest Expansion, was somewhat criticized but Blizzard has been hard at work releasing patches to improve it.
Blizzard is definitely willing to go the extra mile and that’s why World of Warcraft is still the best.
The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online is a somewhat recent MMO that was also supposed to dethrone WoW but couldn’t. Nonetheless, it’s still a great MMO and the only Elder Scrolls game on Mac.
The same can be said about Final Fantasy 14, an MMO that might not be as good as WoW but still a great choice for Final Fantasy and anime fans.
If I had to recommend a free-to-play MMO, I would hesitate between The Lord of the Rings Online and Guild Wars 2, both excellent and generous in the amount of content you can enjoy without having to pay a dime.
